Arrow [Guide] Using StreamTorrent.

[Guide] Using StreamTorrent

What is StreamTorrent?
StreamTorrent is a somewhat new streaming application that has been gaining momentum among streamers and stream viewers alike. The myp2p community has been credited and thanked in the client for all of the testing it has done for the program. Stream viewers have reported greatly improved video quality, while also reporting less CPU and bandwidth usage. Streamers are also pleased with having such a quality stream with lower bitrates than other clients require.

The program has an easy to use interface, and is quite minimalistic. The player itself is very similar to TVAnts and especially SopCast, which makes for an easier transition for users of those programs to switch with little issue to StreamTorrent.

Where to Download?

You can download StreamTorrent using one of the following URL's below. How to Install StreamTorrent.
  1. Download the StreamTorrentSetup.zip file.
  2. Extract the StreamTorrent .exe file, and open the installer.
  3. Fast Install (Buttons to Click): Next, I Agree, Next, Next, Install, Finish.
  4. You're finished.
Broadcasting Your Own StreamTorrent Stream.
See my guide here: [Guide] Broadcasting on StreamTorrent in the Broadcasting/Streaming Forum. Join us!

How to Open a StreamTorrent Stream.
There are several ways to open up a StreamTorrent stream. When using myp2p-listed streams, the most common method you'll be using are link clicking and copy and pasting, so I'll be covering those in particular. You can tell a stream is a StreamTorrent stream when you see the (ST) in the stream listing, i.e. #16TV (ST). Another way to tell if it is a StreamTorrent stream, is the StreamTorrent protocol st:// in the URL.

Link Clicking.
  • To open, click the link, then click "OK" on the prompt to open the stream in StreamTorrent. (Simple, isn't it?)
Copy and Pasting.
  • Text-based ST URL's: Select the text, copy the text, then open up StreamTorrent manually. Next, on the top menu click Edit, then click Paste. StreamTorrent will now prompt you saying "1 New Stream has been added", you can then play it by double-clicking the stream on your list, or by clicking the stream once to highlite it, and then clicking the play button.
  • Link-based ST URL's: Right click the link, copy the link, then open up StreamTorrent manually. Next, on the top menu click Edit, then click Paste. StreamTorrent will now prompt you saying "1 New Stream has been added", you can then play it by double-clicking the stream on your list, or by clicking the stream once to highlite it, and then clicking the play button.

StreamTorrent Link Issues.
This isn't a problem with the program itself, but rather an issue that has appeared occasionally on the myp2pforum. Due to the length of the st:// URL's, links have at times been listed with a space, or in a resolved form featuring the %20 hex code. Links with this issue will not work as the URL is broken. To fix this, simply remove the space. When posting a URL featuring an st:// URL, use the URL button on your post editor menu.

The Facts Behind the *******/Internet Explorer Issue.
In an attempt to be helpful, and resolve one of the issues with StreamTorrent (the one listed above), I introduced a ******* URL for the popular stream VP5. This URL is still currently in circulation because it does work. However, ******* and Internet Explorer don't get along when processing the st:// URL from this, and will not work with Internet Explorer. This is a non-issue for Firefox users, as the stream will load perfectly fine in StreamTorrent, so it's just one more reason to switch, right? Right.

Channel Name/Stream List Bug.
There is a minor bug in the program. If you don't have your stream list cleared, you may have a random issue in which your newly loaded stream will be titled under a previously loaded channel name. Example: You previously loaded VP5, and now you just loaded TigerTown4. Because of this bug, TigerTown4 may appear as VP5 on your list. If you view it, it will be TigerTown4, just named VP5.

The best way to resolve this issue is to clear your channel listing after each use. While this doesn't have any effect on playback, it will help eliminate any unnecessary confusion.

What Ports Need Opening?
Honestly, I've personally not had to open any ports, however it was previously recommended in a buried post in the original StreamTorrent thread to open the following ports. I'd only open these ports if the program doesn't work immediately after install to save yourself a possible headache.
  • IPv4 (TCP/UDP): 15800-15899
  • IPv6 (TCP/UDP): 15900-15999

Channel Buffering/Slow Connect Bug.
When you click on a StreamTorrent link, it auto-loads the stream, opening a player window with the stream list minimized. If it doesn't want to connect quickly, pull up the stream list and it'll start connecting to the stream. This is good for "Expired" streams to get them to load more quickly.

F.A.Q.
Have a question that isn't answered above? Ask, and I'll do my best to provide an answer.
Question: I used IE and it took one click and it worked. I thought it didn't work?
Answer: The only time a StreamTorrent link doesn't work is when ******* is used to shorten the lengthy st:// URL. If a link is a complete st:// URL without the space in it, it'll work in IE. For more information about the ******* issue, look above.

Question: Does StreamTorrent Work with VLC?
Answer: Yes, both broadcasting and stream viewing are possible using VLC. The same method used for TVAnts/SopCast works with StreamTorrent.
  1. Open StreamTorrent.
  2. Load the stream of your choice.
  3. Right click the video.
  4. Click properties.
  5. Copy the .asf URL. (Example: 127.0.0.1:15900/2.asf)
  6. Next, Open VLC.
  7. Click File.
  8. Open Network Stream (or CTRL+N).
  9. Select HTTP.
  10. Paste the .asf URL.
  11. Click OK, and you're done!
Question: How can I tell when StreamTorrent is able to connect to the internet?
Answer: Hover over the StreamTorrent icon in the system tray. It'll display your current status. It should say "Stream Torrent Net State: Connected(Perfect)" when you have proper connectivity to StreamTorrent. If you don't, you likely have a port forwarding/firewall issue. The ports needing forwarded are listed above. You can learn how to properly forward ports using this guide here.

= Connected.
= Connection Error/Blocked by Firewall/Partially Connected.
= Offline/Not Connected to the Internet.

Question: How do you make StreamTorrent stay on top?

Answer: It's easy.
  1. Open the StreamTorrent Stream in a New Player.
  2. Right Click the Window Frame OR Right Click the Player in your Taskbar.
  3. Click "Always On Top".
  4. You're done!

Question: When I load a StreamTorrent stream, why does it say "Quality: Expired. Audience: Expired"?
Answer: When a StreamTorrent stream is old, and has been started and stopped more than once by the streamer, it will display this until it updates on your stream list. The stream is still running, and will play despite this.

Question: How do you use the Filter feature?
Answer: The Filter feature is meant for usage when you've got an extensive list of already added channels to your list of streams. You can narrow it and find a specific, previously viewed stream that is still on your list by typing in the filter box. It's a live filtering search, and will trim your list to your desired channel.

Question: How do you use the Search feature?
Answer: To use the Search feature...
  1. Click the Search Icon OR click the Search Button next to the Filter textbox.
  2. Next, type in a keyword you'd like to search for OR select one from the list such as Sports.
  3. Now, select the channel you'd like to see, and click one of the following...
  • Open: Clicking this will add the channel to your stream list, and open the stream for viewing.
  • Add: Clicking this will not open the stream for viewing, but it will add this to your stream list.
  • Add All: This will add all of the results you've obtained from your search to your channel list.

Question: StreamTorrent buffers but doesn't play anything. (Original Thread HERE)
Answer:
  • Vista: Start > Paste regsvr32 wmnetmgr.dll in the search > Enter.
  • XP: Start > Run > Paste regsvr32 wmnetmgr.dll > Enter.
Thanks, and I hope you enjoy your StreamTorrent experience!

Hmmm, sounds interesting. This might just be my new broadcast method for the upcoming season.

Default Alternative method for obtaining the .asf string

Hello,

I'm running StreamTorrent in OS X using Wine. Right now, I have 420TV4 running but the StreamTorrent player won't run, as expected, so I opened the stream in the background. I need to get the .asf link in order to run it in vlc, but according to the guide, I need the player opened so that I can get this link.

Any ideas? If it doesn't work, I can always boot into windows, but it would be convenient to avoid is.

Thanks!

edit-
Just saw the other StreamTorrent thread. It looks like the problem I have was touched on in that thread. I browsed the entire thing and couldn't find an answer.

By the way, I have stremed mlb games with ST in Windows 7 and it does work very well!

About what i told StreamTorrent needs function for the Context Menu like "Copy url to Clipboard", i told that longer but Developer doesnt implemented it yet.
This was usefull on Systems which using no Media Player or can use on Windows too easyer like different Player to Play the Stream without Open the Player to get url for playing.

About on OS X works StreamTorrent ? i doesnt get it worked under my linux with wine.

Possible hope Developer makes a break or is on vacation.
Closed Source Software you cant help with improvments, when its dead then can forget it to use it.

But on OpenSource you can make Patches when some things is needed or there can join new Developers to help with Development.

Currently, there is no way to really figure it out within the program other than loading the player.

My best advice is to make an educated guess.

127.0.0.1:15900/2.asf
localhost:15900/2.asf

Depending on how many streams you've opened up since starting your PC/Mac, you can make an educated guess by listing 1 if it is your first stream you've opened. If it is your 4th, then use 127.0.0.1:15900/4.asf and it should work. This is of course running the stream and putting it into VLC.

It's not the best advice, but it's really your only option other than obtaining it from within the program itself, but if it doesn't work.. Yeah.

As for ST + WINE, that'd make for a welcomed addition to the guide. I'm just not the person for the job as my experience with it is very limited. Sorry.

No problem.

Update: I've updated and added this resolution to the F.A.Q. in the main post, along with the image example. I've also provided another way to access the menu to help prevent any confusion.

Additional Update: I've added the mirrors, and provided an additional mirror of the latest version which should help if any of the others go down, which has been a problem previously due to the growing popularity of the program.

Another Update: Have added an icon status guide to the "How can I tell if ST is connected?" F.A.Q. question for better, visual clarification.

Added a 4th mirror
Removed the broadcasting info & replaced it with a link to the Guide in the Broadcasting/Streaming forum.
Deleted several resolved old news posts that are now in the First Post.

Hi!
I'm a newbie using this kind of software so excuse me if I ask for something obvious.
First of all, I'm from Spain, last year I tried to watch NFL games on Sopcast but I couldn't see them well (the streaming was just 30% and it stopped all the time).
Last week I tried it again with TVAnts, I found a stream and I could see an entire match perfectly so I became more interested and tried another streams (this time on StreamTorrent). But I just can't get a good one, it just stops at 30-40% and I don't receive anything.
I've read some FAQs, I've checked my ports, my firewall and my TCP/IP config, but I can't see them well.
Maybe it's my connection bandwidth (3M) or the fact that I'm in Spain but I can't understand why I could watch a game perfectly and now I don't receive anything.
Any help?

Thanks

Default Hit and Miss

I've been having problems connecting to ST... (I've had great help so far with some success)... I have been connected a couple times after I opened the ports suggested but still getting disconnected. My interenet service provider suggested I may have problems with the software I am trying to connect to (ST).

OS: XP
Browser: Firefox
Have opened ports as suggested in this post
ST Icon in taskbar shows a red cross through it saying I am disconnected. (I was watch VP5 tonight but it disconnected during the stream?)

Not sure what is going on here... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

thanks!

Your internet connection should be good enough to handle a typical StreamTorrent stream, so I don't see that being an issue here. What does your StreamTorrent icon look like?

Since it's the it'd likely be a Firewall error. Did you add the exception for those ports in your Windows Firewall as well? Opening it in your modem/router is good, but if Windows and any additional program (anti-virus software, etc) is blocking it, that could surely be the problem.

For quick help with Windows Firewall on Windows XP, click here.

Hopefully that helps. If not, it's a good starting point. Good luck!

I take that 3M as your download speed? What's your upload speed. p2p streams require both. Run a speed test & report your results. (or at the end of the test, it will give you a link to copy/paste the results here.)

You mean under Edit / Paste link, nothing happens? What about clickable links (like the ones in my sig file.) Will they autoadd for you when you click on them? Paste one of the st:// linkes here & I'll try it or see if it's got any hex in it preventing it from being recognized by Stream Torrent.

Hopefully that helps. If not, it's a good starting point. Good luck!
Thanks! Great advice... I checked with xp firewall and I have it turned off due to the security system I already have... I went into that firewall program and added the ports listed above but still have the same problem ... bummer... ummm... I have no idea where to go from here. Maybe reinstall the ST program? It's all a bit odd, because ST has worked a few times. Everyone has been really helpful here at myp2p. Thanks again and if you have anything to advise please pass along. I'll check this post.
