Default [Guide] Installing Stream Torrent in Linux

*Version 1*

This guide is intended to help you install Stream Torrent in a Linux distro using WINE. I believe this can also be applied to Mac OS systems.

This guide will be based on using Linux Mint (which is really Ubuntu at the core, but is very easily applied to other Distros).

There are 2 ways of downloading WINE.

1. If you want to download WINE using your linux terminal, go to 1A.
2. If you want to use your package manager (i.e Synaptic, mintInstall etc) go to section 2a.

Section 1- Installing WINE via the linux terminal.

Will ADD

Section 2- Installing WINE through your distro package manager (i.e Synaptic, mintInstall).

2a. Click on the menu button and click on mintInstall (or your linux software manager such as Synaptic, Add/Remove Program).

2b. In the search bar, type WINE. An application will be filtered called WINE-DOORS. Select the program and click the install button.

2c. Another window will pop up asking for confirmation that you want to download and install the package. Click on the install button one more time.

Once you do that you will see the installation software (Synaptic/ mintInstall) start to downlod the packages for WINE.

2d. After WINE has downloaded, you will get a confirmation that it has downloaded and installed sucesfully.

Now proceed to Section 3 to download and install Stream Torrent.

Section 3- Downloading and Installing WINE.

3a. Direct yourself to the Stream torrent site at StreamTorrent | Google Groups

and click on the link under latest installation. Download this file to your desktop.

3b. After Stream Torrent has downloaded, you will need to extract the zip archive. Go to the directory where we saved the StreamTorrent zip (in this guide we saved it to desktop). Right click the file and click 'extract Archieve'.

3c. When the extraction tool opens, click on the extract tab and extract the contents of the zip file to the desktop.

3d. Navigate to the folder where you extracted the Stream Torrent set up files. Right click on the .exe and select 'Open with Wine Windows Loader Program'. WINE will begin to launch the .exe and you should be greeted with the instalation for Stream Torrent.

3e. Install Stream Torrent by following the on screen directions. When it comes to asking you the path where it should install Stream Torrent, leave it at the default path. Click next on continue the on screen steps to install Stream Torrent.

3f. With Stream Torrent installed we now need to launch it. If you click on your menu tab you will see a new menu called 'WINE'. Select it and you will see another option called 'Browse Virtual C: Drive'. Left click that option.

3g. The virtual C: drive is exactly what it says, a virtual C: drive like in Windows. Click on Local Disk>Program Files> Stream Torrent and left click the Stream Torrent .exe to launch.

3h. Happy viewing.

************************************************** *******
NOTE
************************************************** *******
  • You can also install WINE using the terminal, but its a bit more work and I found that using you package manager is easier for the novice. I will add this information to the tutorial later.
  • For a guide on how to use Stream Torrent, please use the excellent guide written by Numbuh 16 here

Great tut mate 10/10

One question thou doesn't StreamTorrent need WMP to play a stream and can you run WMP in Wine?

Edit: done a little search and it seems you can use WMP 9 & 10 but not 11.

I tried to use StreamTorrent in Ubuntu through Wine. It installs and it runs but channel search doesn't work. Even if you manually add channel it doesn't buffer at all. I tried with several channels and not any work.

I think you need WMP 9 on your ubuntu mate. I will try that with my mint install today and feed back!

If you need a old version of Windows Media Player get a copy from here.
Download Windows Media Player - Old Version.com

Also the same for Internet Explorer.

I too have just attempted to run streamtorrent in Ubuntu under WINE and have seen the same result. The application loads, but will not connect to the network (even after forwarding all of the appropriate ports). When a stream is run in the background, it will only put the state to "Running" but will not actually connect to any sources. Coincidentally, I am unable to access the Options menu for the program (it simply will not load). I have tried manually modifying a few configurations in the .ini file, but have no success. Anyone have any ideas or has anyone successfully run Streamtorrent under another Linux distribution?

Thanks for this, I can manage to do most things with Linux and had already installed wine/ST, but I wasn't aware I needed WMP to make it work. Sweet. Oh, and I'm running Mint too!!!

I downloaded WMP10. You cant use the Microsoft download link but have to download a script of the wine site which downloads the installation and proper codecs/ .dlls. It installed fine and now streams in streamtorrent attempt to load however I still have not connected to a stream. I will test more streams later on today.

how old? Linux does run on older PC's but some distros are more resource intensive, for mint you're going to want 512mb ram MINIMUM. Unless you want to run the XFCE version, in which case you'll need 256mb ram MINIMUM

Has anyone had any success getting the videos to actually play yet?

I am on Ubuntu 9.04, WINE 1.1.27 and like many other here I can get the channels to "start" but there are no connections being made to peers. It pops open a Stream Torrent Player window but of course there is nothing being displayed in it other than a logo.

Of course the other option is to run it in a virtualized Windows environment. It just tried it, and maybe it is more a function of the streams themselves, but they have been really choppy for MLB and NFL games I just tried out. Hopefully a proper Linux version gets developed sometime soon.

Somehow I doubt that mate. Development has stopped and the google group is spammed like hell with no moderation. Hopefully the dev team will post an update soon, or if not publish the source!

It's useless if it doesn't work in Linux. I don't want to return on Windows because of that.
