Cool NASCAR Race Day Archives 2009 [DISCUSS]

The Daytona 500 is a 200-lap, 500 miles (800 km) long NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race held annually at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. It is one of four restrictor plate races on the Cup schedule. In 2008, the race celebrated its 50th running.

The Daytona 500 is regarded by many as the most important and prestigious race on the NASCAR calendar, carrying by far the largest purse. Championship points awarded are equal to that of any other Sprint Cup race. It is also NASCAR's first race of the year; this phenomenon is virtually unique in sports, which tend to have championships or other major events at the end of the season rather than the start. Since 1995, U.S. television ratings for the Daytona 500 have been the highest for any auto race of the year, surpassing the traditional leader, the Indianapolis 500 which in turn greatly surpasses the Daytona 500 in in-track attendance and international viewing. The 2006 Daytona 500 attracted the sixth largest average live global TV audience of any sporting event that year with 20 million viewers.

The event serves as the final event of Speedweeks and is known as "The Great American Race" and the "Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing." It is held the second or third Sunday in February, and since 1971, has been loosely associated with Presidents Day weekend.
The winner of the Daytona 500 is presented with the Harley J. Earl Trophy in Victory Lane, and the winning car is displayed, in race-winning condition, for one year at Daytona 500 Experience, a museum and gallery adjacent to Daytona International Speedway.

    Track Facts:

    Track/Race Length: 2.5 mile oval, 200 laps, 500 miles
Tri-oval with 31-degree banking in the turns
18-degree banking in the tri-oval and 6-degree banking on the straightaways
    Date track opened: 1959
Banking in turns 1-4: 31 degrees
    Banking in tri-oval: 18 degrees
    Banking on backstretch: 3 degrees
Banking on the straightaway: 6 degrees
    Length of frontstretch: 3,800 feet
    Length of backstretch: 3,400 feet

Ye! It was a thrilling finish! I liked Kyle's bump to Tony! then kyle tried to move in the front but he was getting loose and edwards got the 2nd positon! That was a typical Daytona finish, in fact always in the last lap drivers try to fight for the lead and sometimes we see BIG ONES! Tomorrow we'll see a great race tough... don't know who's gonna win but I wanna #88 in the victory lane. So, cmon #88

Cya tomorrow guys! and awesome job streamers

    From ESPN.com

NASCAR will implement single-file restarts over the final 20 laps instead of the final 10 in all three series during the 2009 season, officials said on Thursday.

The rule was changed to give lead-lap drivers a better chance to go for the victory instead of having to battle lapped traffic on the inside as they do on double-file restarts.

NASCAR also is evaluating the 50-foot distance announced at the Budweiser Shootout as the new standard for the leader to restart an event. It could decrease from track to track based on driver input, officials said.

Under the new rule, the leader has between the double-red line 50 feet from the start-finish line and single-red line at the start-finish line to start the race. Otherwise, the starter on the flag stand will start the field.

I think it is a good news as we can see more fight for the lead without lapped cars.
