    Default VLC Media Player Question

My Windows Media Player 11 no longer works, it can't be fixed since I have Vista and it is apart of the program and not possible to remove and re-download.

So, I have been using the VLC Media Player. I have made it my default media player. However, when I go to websites where the streaming video is embeded in the site, it still defaults to Windows Media Player. This is fine, as long as I can right click, select properties and copy the URL link into VLC and it works.

However, there are sites where the ability to extract the link is disabled. Is there a way I can still get the URL or a way I can make VLC the default player? Again, I have set VLC to every default option already. But, am I missing something?

On a second note. I have tried to watch Irish TV channel TG4. Again, the stream is embeded in the site. I can extract the link. But it wont play in VLC. This is odd, because on my office computer (using Windows Media 9) I can extract the link and make it play in VLC. But, at home, using Windows Media 11, the link i extract looks very different than the one on my office computer and wont allow me to play it in VLC.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks

To get WMP 11 to work again in Vista Disable the User Account Control feature that should sort it as its a pain just google how to do it as im a XP user myself and dont have Vista in front of me.

    Ok found it for you

Disable the User Account Control feature in Vista

    1# Open Control Panel.

2# Under User Account and Family settings click on the "Add or remove user account".

3# Click on one of the user accounts, for example you can use the Guest account.

4# Under the user account click on the "Go to the main User Account page" link.

5# Under "Make changes to your user account" click on the "Change security settings" link.

6# In the "Turn on User Account Control (UAC) to make your computer more secure" untick "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer". Click on the Ok button.

7# You will be prompted to reboot your computer. Do so when ready.

Note: In order to re-enable UAC just select the above checkbox and reboot.

    DMW,

Good news and bad news, though it is not bad because everything works out in the end. I did try what you suggested but it did not work. Tried opening a TV station in WMP and it just did what it normally does, tries to open, then does nothing and then just says "ready" But....here is where you have been a savior. You mentioned about a guest account when you were giving me the instructions. I enabled that. If i use the guest account WMP does work there. So, in future if I want to use a stream that I cant get the URL for and paste into the VLC Media Player, I will just switch and use the guest account. Thanks sir for your help, this allows me to watch so many more channels now!!

Done a little research on Vista and WMP11 and found this

Go to Start - > Type Run in the Search Box - > type regsvr32 wmp.dll.
This resets WMP11 back to its normal state in your main account.

Tried this out (and think I have tried this before too) but did not work. I think what happened with the WMP 11 in the main account was...before I knew of these websites to watch TV, I got duped in to thinking I could with one of those Satellite TV for PC programs. I immediately discontinued it and asked for my money back when I saw it was BS, but I read somewhere that when you download the program it screws up WMP 11.

But, again not the end of the world since I can now use WMP in the guest account and thanks for your suggestions and assistance!
