Satellite up and down bandwidth

Does anyone know the minimum bandwidth required to have a good viewing experience ...or the minimum required not to degrade the downstream. I'm on a satellite system which I just upgraded to the max:
1.5 down and 256K up. The 256K seems highly variable, running at 70K to about 150K so far (that's wireless...will direct connect to the modem when it's not in use...am sharing it with the household) and am wondering if this is acceptable for live TV.
