If you check the list you would see every country has indeed FTA channels showing it, but in some of them specific games are pay tv only.

Most big/home nations or important games should be FTA, but it depends all on the local channels and what they decide to show

That's a disgrace, the WC should be freely available in EVERY county

I thought so, but as of now, haven't come across a source tellin' me how exactly the final group matches are broadcasted in the UK, that let to my "almost".
Do you know, whether they'll show them in simulcast/conference, or will they have 2 channels up for the parallel staged matches? BBC seems to have their coverage as one match on BBC1 and the other on BBC Red Button, ITV lists both to be shown on ITV1.

German TV will broadcast all matches, too, the last group matches on:

    1) one on ZDF, the other on ZDF Infokanal (Group A, B and F)
    2) one on ARD, the other on Eins Festival (Group C, D and G)
    3) one on ZDF, the other on RTL (Group E and H)

That list looks very familiar...probably because I put a lot of work into it over at Wikipedia to whip it into its current state

In the USA, ABC's coverage is par for the course. We're probably the only country whose broadcaster will not be showing all of the national team's group matches.

*Sat 12 June: USA vs England, 14:00 ET/11:00 PT
*Sun 13 June: Germany vs Australia, 14:00 ET/11:00 PT
*Sat 19 June: Cameroon vs Denmark, 14:00 ET/11:00 PT
*Sun 20 June: Brazil vs Ivory Coast, 14:00 ET/11:00 PT
    *Sat 26 June: Round of 16, Winner of C vs Runner-up of D, 14:00 ET/11:00 PT
    *Sun 27 June: Round of 16, Winner of B vs Runner-up of A, 14:00 ET/11:00 PT
    *Sat 3 July: Quarterfinal 3, 09:30 ET/06:30 PT
    *Sat 3 July: Quarterfinal 4, 14:00 ET/11:00 PT
*Sat 10 July: Third Place, 14:00 ET/11:00 PT
    *Sun 11 July: Final, 13:30 ET/10:30 PT

All other matches will be on ESPN or ESPN2.

10 matches is the minimum required to be shown on ABC by their 2007 contract with FIFA, which runs through the 2014 World Cup. In 2006 ABC aired 12 matches. This is still a lot better coverage than in past years (feel free to make fun of us, those in Europe) -- until 1982 not even the final was shown live, and coverage of all matches did not come until 1998. In 2002 there almost was no coverage because of the time difference, but eventually something happened and 12 matches total were shown.

Here's hoping that a network that might actually be willing to cover the Cup -- CBS and Fox, I'm looking in your directions -- nabs the rights for 2018.

ESPN's making a big deal out of the fact that they got Martin Tyler as their top play-by-play man. I believe the ESPN regulars -- Tommy Smyth, Derek Rae, Adrian Healey, etc. -- will join him. Ian Darke will be calling matches as well. After the commentary disaster in 2006 anything's better, really.

Spanish language coverage: As usual, 56 matches are free-to-air on Univision with the 8 simultaneous group matches airing on sister network Telefutura. Normal Spanish-language channel ESPN Deportes will have coverage in Portuguese for some reason. (This continues a streak of a random sports channel that no one watches boosting ratings by airing the World Cup in a foreign language; SSNA aired German coverage in 2006.)

Also, for the first time ever, the World Cup will be broadcast on ESPN Radio. I think all matches will be commentated. (So if you're FTA only, it's not a bad idea to turn the TV to Univision if you get it, turn the Spanish down and turn on a radio)

    Hey,

From the listings I have gathered the BBC will be using the 'Red Button' and ITV will be using ITV4 when needed

It seems ITV are yet to release their schedule for the 19.30 games between 21st to 25th June, I am sure they will use ITV1 and ITV4 but the actual games on each channel are yet to be confirmed, I think they're waiting to see who will be in what position so they can decided which game deserves the ITV1 coverage.

In the UK, we are getting every game FTA, its a law

The first law I really adore!

No such law here, four years back (and the WC was in our country!),
"only" 56 matches were shown FTA.

Thanks for your answer, much appreciated!

No problem, a great law, one I approve of, it protects certain sports from being on Pay TV.

In the UK for the latter stages the bbc & itv get to pick the games each. So they wont decide until later in the competition but every game will be live.

As for when 2 group matches are played at the same time depending on the time the other game will be BBCi or BBC3(i think) and for ITV it will be on ITV4
Broadcasting on RTO Website - Live European Sport.
